About SVCT

Empower has its roots in its pioneering partner organization in India, The Swamy Babu & Vajramma Charitable Trust (SVCT), a charitable organization established in India.

SVCT was established in 1985 in memory of Sri Potnuru Swamy Babu (1884-1981). A freedom fighter in the Indian independence movement, Swamy Babu was deeply dedicated to Gandhian philosophy and values. He believed that self-sufficient village economies would help address the complex problems of poverty. In this spirit, he and his wife, Vajramma, founded many institutions in his hometown, Narasannapeta, Srikakulam district, including a maternity hospital, veterinary hospital, schools, and an orphanage. Additionally, he donated land for local religious institutions, both Hindu temples and Christian churches. His approach to social reform was holistic, emphasizing that the community’s different needs were not isolated, but rather interconnected. Although he often faced resistance and criticism from the community, he remained dedicated and committed to his mission.

In honor of Swamy Babu’s philanthropy and history of giving, his grandchildren (Tankala Babjee and T. V. Kumara Gupta) founded SVCT. Now, the organization continues Swamy Babu’s goal of holistic reform and community development in the Srikakulam district.
